HAND PAINTED TILES IN A LONG ISLAND KITCHEN

While their kitchen was being gutted and then totally renovated and expanded, the owners contacted us through their architect,

Kenneth R. Lange, AIA, of Stamford, Connecticut, to design something special to be painted on ceramic tiles.

They wanted a lot of unrelated subject matter so we had to come up with a solution to tie everything together.

We added a 2"x 6" bullnose trim tile piece to the vertical face of every counter top and painted a lacey border with

tiny leaves and flowers on all of them.

The space behind the range is decorated with flowers to give the feeling of a growing garden.

The large switch plates are painted with a continuation of the design on the tiles so that they disappear visually.

The grill is in the breakfast area of the kitchen. The owners wanted something different

to distinguish that space from the rest of the kitchen. We continued the border on the

counter top trim and painted a bucholic scene on the tile mural backsplash.

With the decorative details and the colors everything visually ties together.

AUDUBON BIRDS IN THE KITCHEN

The ducks in these two murals are divided into saltwater and freshwater categories swimming in opposite directions

and separated in the corner by some painted rocks.

They are placed according to their habitat preferences in life and they are in scale with each other.

The prairie mural depicts a scene at dawn in the owner's native Wisconsin.  The design is adapted from her photographs.

She had volunteered to sit in a blind and count prairie chickens as they performed their mating dance in the quiet light of the dawn.

It is mounted on the wall to liven up a back hall that goes to the garage and the back stairs.

PINK PLAID TILES IN THE KITCHEN

The family cats have the run of the house and the wife is an enthusiastic gardener.

The intention of the tile design was to bring the garden indoors for the family to enjoy year round and to remind guests of the elevated status of the cats in residence.

This kitchen/family-room/dining area is a large bright space with a lot going on.

It was a new addition and renovation of the original room that was still under construction when we were introduced by their architect,

Kenneth Lange AIA, of Stamford, Connecticut.

There are four tile backsplashe murals in this kitchen as well as a large wall area mural behind the professional range.

There is also a tiled fireplace surround and a food preparation island with a tiled work surface..

The unifying design factor for all of these spaces is a rose-colored French plaid and a tiny leaf and flower design in the four corners of each tile.

Each backsplash has it's own corner design that's in the same scale as the others.
